Task 1 – Proposal Development (20%)
Timeframe: Week 01 – 03
You are to work as groups in presenting an innovative concept that
introduces unique social, cultural and/or economic value to the intended
target audience within your chosen field of specialization. You are to
conduct research on current technology and design trends that influence
and benchmark your area of specialization. Case studies with analysis
reports on product/service functionality and effectiveness, technical
innovations and challenges, aesthetics and design appreciation are
required to support your new project proposal. The project must address
the ‘gap’ where you have discovered and realized ideas and solutions that
create and capture value in a novel way.
TASK 1 – PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT
Week 01 / Topic Discussion
In the first week of Major Project I, we were assigned to respective
tutorial groups based on our specialization. To begin with the first
step of our project, Ms Vitiyaa introduced us to a project briefing on
what's needed for task 1.
During group discussion, our group came up with several ideas for the
project:
-
Product Packaging Design
-
Brand Guidelines (Packaging Design + Guidelines Booklet + Social
Media)
-
Boardgames / cardgames
- Squid Game-inspired board game
- Valentine-themed board game
Below are some sketches we created for both ideas:

As Ms Vitiyaa recommended that we do something unique rather than
fitting into the standards, we decided to go with the idea of creating
a board game that meets the current trends; our base concept of the
boardgame was inspired by the Netflix series "Squid Game" with the
theme of murder mystery.
After deciding on the final concept, we discussed the game-play system
and the purpose of the play (winner, player roles, rules etc).
Week 02 / Proposal Slide Preparation
In week 2, we gathered up as a group and collected visuals for the
project's moldboard. We also went into further details on the gameplay
system as well as its overall layout on the board game.

Based on our initial sketch above, our groupmate Carmen helped in sketch our first designs on the board layout. The layout on the left is our first design, however, after some discussion, we decided to change the games in their fixed position to mini-game cards so that every round, there is more variety in playing among people.
We also changed ddakji as the dice to coins instead so that it is easier to use during the gameplay. Both worked the same with front (move 1) and back (move 2), but using a coin indicates the move more clearly compared to ddakji.

Ms Vitiyaa also gave us a briefing on the proposal outlines for us to
refer to for our proposal presentation:

Before creating the presentation slides, we gathered information and content by distributing our roles into different sections, and I was in charge of researching and analysing existing media on board games.
Task Roles:
Introduction- Carmen
Project Objectives- Graciella
Audience Research- Rafa
Existing Media Analysis- Me (Seoyoon)

After gathering information, we moved on to creating our presentation slides for the first 3 parts of the proposal. Below are the presentation slides we created:

We also had a group meeting among the group members to practice our parts of the presentation.
Week 03 / Presentation Week

On week 3, we presented our prepared proposal slides to the class where I was in charge of presenting our project goals. Ms Vitiyaa commented that we should improve on the problem statement part as it's rather unclear on what we're trying to do.
Below is our updated problem statement:

FEEDBACK
Week 01
General Feedback:
Discuss your thoughts among group members thoroughly while processing and
distributing the tasks in the development.
Specific Feedback:
Make sure your topic is relevant to the current brand trends. Do some
good research before carrying out the project. Ms Vitiyaa commented both
Squid Game and Valentine-themed board games sound interesting. She advised
us to have a discussion among group members to decide on which board game
to proceed with.
Week 02
Follow the proposal guide to build up the proposal presentation
content. Try to play the game (prototype) to test whether the game works
before going further on the design of the game. Get to know what to
improve/ add to the game system. Do some research on current existing
mystery board games.
Week 03
Make sure the board game layout has more options for the players to engage with the game as what we presented previously lacks in its variety. Develop a problem statement on why this board game should be created & designed despite the existence of the current board games.
REFLECTION
It was an insightful and great experience to begin the first 3 weeks of the semester. I was grouped with Carmen, Graciella, and Rafa and all of my groupmates were very open to sharing our ideas for discussion. Although board game mechanics need quite a lot of rules and systems to build on in the beginning, it was fun to share various ideas and opinions on how we could make the game more engaging among group members. On the other hand, I felt that I needed to step up more to participate as most of the concept ideas were given by other members, and I hope to improve more on fully utilizing my skills to support my group members. I am grateful to my group members for always giving out creative ideas for the kick-off of this project and working together as a group to communicate with each other for a better solution.
