PROCESS

Recap from Major Project I

Fig 1.1 Presentation Slides from MP1 (PDF), 2025

Week 1 / Planning

In week 1, before beginning, we gathered all of the progress we made from Major Project I and gathered what should be done for the next step.

Below is the list of things we came up with as a plan to proceed this semester:

  1. External decoration - start from where (footprint) to our exhibition
  2. Social Media - Advertising of our launch for WHO 'R U?
  3. Promotional Items (Posters, merchandising, flyers, banners, etc)
  4. Website
  5. Big size of our board on the floor with footprint? So people can experience our game. Get lost in the world of WHO 'RU?

Fig 1.2 Plan Sheet (PNG), Week 1

And then we created a Google Sheet and organized everything that we have to do and who is responsible for doing the task.

After discussion, we have divided our roles into these tasks:
  • Carmen: Social Media post design (9 posts)
  • Graciella: Banner design
  • Rafa: Promotional Poster design, Website UI design
  • Me: Box packaging design

1. Social Media Post (Carmen)
Below is Carmen's initial design for social media. She intended to create a continuous tile post.

2. Promo Poster (Rafa)
Below is Rafa's poster design. We suggested changing the font for the heading to match our board game's identity.

3. Banner (Graciella)
This is our banner draft done by Graciella.

4. Box Packaging Design (Me)
Initially, we planned to have a two-piece box packaging for our board game, but after some discussion, we decided to change the structure of our packaging to a magnetic box packaging (attached lid) so that it is easier for players to open and close multiple times when playing the game.

Below is our reference on the structure of the box.

Fig 1.6 Packaging Reference, Week 1

After deciding on the structure, I moved on to refine our packaging design based on the initial design I made from Major Project I.

Week 2 / Refining Box Packaging Design & Feedback

1. Box Packaging Design #Draft 1
In week 2, I finished refining the draft for WHO 'R U?'s packaging design based on the new dieline. There are a total of 2 dielines for the packaging of WHO 'R U?:

  • Inner box wrapping
  • Outer shell wrapping (cover)

2. W2 Progress update & Feedback Consultation
After showing the progress to Ms Vitiyaa, we were advised to maintain the overall design consistency for the promotional items. For packaging design, Ms commented that the original way of attaching the main structure with a sticker wrapping is not strong enough to keep the shape. She advised that the glue flap should be enlarged to support the strength.

3. Refining Design
Based on the feedback, Carmen changed the layout to a 9-tile post design, divided from one big design below:

Week 3 / Refining Illustrations & Promotional Items Progress

In week 2, Ms Vitiyaa commented that the overall style of illustration across the minigame cards & board design is not consistent enough (Colour, composition angle, and some illustrations look flat while others look 3D). Therefore, she suggested that one person should revise the illustrations so that each icon looks related to the others. I worked on the illustration for minigames, so I decided to revise the rest.

1. Minigame

Recap from MP1

Fig 3.1 Initial design of Minigame cards from MP1, 2025

Fig 3.2 Colour palette

For minigame illustration, I decided to use a limited colour range from our original colour palette instead of using multiple colours like the previous design.

I planned to keep the 3D style, and as some of the original illustrations looked flat, I changed my method of shading the elements to keep all of the designs consistent.

Initially, I used the blend tool to overlap two elements in different colours to achieve the 3D style. For the revised version, I added a layer of a gradient element using the mesh tool to add a reflection-like lighting onto the surface of the illustration.

Here is what the cards look like before applying textures:

Then I applied the texture onto all of the cards.

2. Board Design

Board Icons Redesign

Fig 3.8 Redesigned Board Icons, Week 3

Above are the redesigned versions of icons for the board. I used the same method of illustration as the icons for minigames to maintain consistency across all designs.

Experimenting with Different Layouts for the Board
Based on the board design from MP1, I rearranged the directions of the section icons to face outwards so that all of the players from multiple directions can view/ read easily when playing the game.

Fig 3.9 Redesigned board drafts (rectangular), Week 3

While developing the first draft, I also figured it would be fun to experiment with the magnifying glass (inspired by WHO 'R U?'s logo) fused with the path of the board.

I changed the layout orientation to landscape and added a circular pattern with a straight entrance so it looks like a giant magnifying glass surrounding our logo.

After discussion with Ms Vitiyaa, we decided to go with the white magnifying glass version for our board (bottom left).

Week 4 / Printing Week

By this week, we have to get our design approved by Ms.Vit to start printing it. We asked feedback for the re-design card and she approved it. So we start printing the cards. I am also in charge of doing the box for the card and here is what it looks like:

Fig 4.1 Process of Designing Box Card, Week 4

Fig 4.2 Printing Card and Box Card, Week 4

When we are trying to do the laser cut, we met Mr.Sham and he gave us a little bit feedback on the packaging and also banner. He suggests that the packaging need to look more "game" packaging and the banner is not consistent with the packaging. From here, Graciella tried to design another design for the packaging. This is how it looks like:

Fig 4.3 Process of Packaging Design, Week 4

After designing it, we also ask Ms.Vit on which one she like the most, but she still thinks that our original design is better, so we decided to use the second design as our banner design. Here is how the banner design draft looks like:

Fig 4.4 Banner Design, Week 4

After consulting with Ms.Vit, she thinks the first one better (up one), so we continue with that. The bottom one we just make it into a poster.

We also started printing our merchandise, which is our sticker sheet and acrylic keychain. Graciella helped to contact the seller of the acrylic keychain, and here is how it looks like:

For the mascot, we decided to change it into a pyramid and fold it our own. Here is how it looks like:

Week 5 / Creating Inner Structure of the Box Packaging

During week 5, we discussed the divider for our packaging to fit in all of our stuff that is included in the box.

Fig 5.1 Discussing the divider for our box,  Week 5

Our box packaging is also done.

Our stickers, booklet and the inner compartment for our box packaging as well.

I went to collect our banner from arch print, and our keychains and pouch also arrived.

Due to our acrylic coins having yet to arrive, we decided on plan B, which is to purchase the clear acrylic and print out the sticker to stick on it.

Week 6 / Final Adjustments

During week 6, we have to refine our inner compartment for our packaging because it keeps on wobbling and it's not really stable. After getting feedback from Ms Vit, we decided to change to balsa wood, and we agreed that this would make our packaging look nicer.

fig 6.1 After feedback from Ms Vit, Week 6

Here is the Before (using a normal paper divider) Vs after (using balsa wood, yet to be sprayed) of our inner compartment.

Fig 6.2 Before Vs After, Week 6

After we decided on the measurement and the placement of the wood in our packaging, we then bought a spray paint to spray our wood, we chose the colour black.

Fig 6.3 Spray painting with the girls, Week 6

We did a little mistake on the placement of the balsa wood when we were glueing it in the box, but we quickly got it covered and decided to print our standee as well.

On Wednesday, we meet up to fix our box and also play our game.

Week 7 / Presentation Week

In week 7, we had our presentation in class. We set up our final outcomes on the table like a mini-exhibition and cosplayed as our game characters: student, mamak uncle, abang police & grab.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 01

What's done W1
  1. Created a group work-plan sheet for items needed to be printed/ created/ enhanced.

Link to sheet: WHO 'R U? TDL

  1. Planned to add more products to be created for the promotion of our project, including a promotion banner, infographic posters, website, social media, and merchandising.

WEEK 02
Make sure the packaging for the board game is correct, and the side can be taped well (flap) for glue, double-decker? plastic thingy to take out from the box so it look organized. The plastic thingy make sure is high enough to hold our products inside (hold in place). Illustrations need to be consistent, need to be the same angle, 3D then 3D the whole thing, the style and feel must be the same.

WEEK 03 (CNY HOLIDAY)

WEEK 04
Good progress, continue to print out the rest of your materials.

WEEK 05
All your physical products is good, decide on a identity for your website and you'll need to think of a company name for your product. Refine your poster.

WEEK 06
Find a balsa wood to stick underneath your divider compartment so its more stable and it will stop wobbling

REFLECTION

This module brought us closer together than ever before, and we are all truly grateful that our paths crossed back in our very first Major Project 1 lecture. It feels like the perfect place to end this journey together. A huge part of that journey was guided by our lecturer, Ms Vitiyaa, whose constant support, honest feedback, and willingness to show us what to do and what not to do

made an enormous difference throughout the entire process. The first few weeks felt overwhelming with everything on our plate, but having her guidance alongside our team's strength made it all manageable.

As a team, we made it a point to listen to each other, support one another, and divide tasks in a way that played to each person's strengths. All of us came together for the packaging and printing, while each member also took ownership of their own areas. I handled the board, minigame cards, booklet, and packaging design. Graciella worked on the banner, card box dieline, sticker sheet, and design varieties for the packaging, and also helped with the initial divider. Carmen folded the mascot, keychains, and social media posts, and helped cut the wood for the divider. Rafa took charge of the character cards, website, posters, and booth decoration.

Looking back, we are so proud of what we built, not just the game, but the team. We would do it all over again in a heartbeat.
