PROJECT 02– INNOVATIVE PACKAGING (20%)
Timeframe: Week 05 – Week 07 (Deadline Week 07)

This is a collaboration project between the Design School and the School of Business. Students from TBS and SLAS have developed a product and are in need of packaging design for their product.

In this project, TBS and TDS collaborate on producing a commercially viable product with a business model, business financials, packaging design, consumer profiling, media visibility and marketing plan for a water bottle product named “ThermoBrew”.

Objective:
The objective of this project is to encourage students to use their critical thinking skills and design skills to create packaging that effectively communicates the brand message and is aesthetically pleasing.

PROJECT 2– INNOVATIVE PACKAGING

Week 1– Group Formation
In week 1, Mr Shamsul gave us a quick briefing on project 2, where The Design School (us) carry out a collaborative project with students from The Business School. After the briefing, we listened to a product proposal by some students from TBS. Mr Shamsul also allowed us to choose a product group of our own.

I decided to join ThermoBrew's team. Below is the list of our team members. We were divided into two groups as per the project guideline, requiring multiple target audiences per product.

Week 2– First Meeting
In week 2, we had our first meeting with TBS. They provided further details about their target audiences, and we asked several questions regarding their preferred style, brand identity, and other aspects. TBS stated that they would like us to approach a minimalistic, eco-friendly style for their packaging design.

They targeted two different target audiences: workaholics and adventurers, and our group (TB2) decided to go for workaholics.

To begin building a brand for ThermoBrew, we decided to get started with sketching out a few logos from each of the team members, and to further discuss with final choice for the logo.

Week 3,4 – Logo, Colour Palette & Typeface
1. Logo Sketches Proposal
In week 3 and 4, we had our meeting where we presented our prepared sketches and further discussed with TBS on their logo of choice. Below are the logo sketches from me and my group members:

After some discussion, we came up with a choice of logo design. We also picked a mascot design for ThermoBrew.

We also arranged for TBS some colour options for them to select according to their brand vision.

We also decided to use Prosto One as our logo typeface and Roboto for body text.

Week 5-8 – Prototype & Initial Packaging Design
During weeks 5 to 8, we designed our initial ideas for packaging. Below is the 3D printed prototype for ThermoBrew bottle.

1. Packaging Structure
Carmen helped to design some of the packaging structures, and we decided to go with the first idea.

2. Design Drafts
After finalizing the packaging structure, each of the group members proposed packaging designs to TBS. Below is my proposed design for workaholics:

After some discussion, we decided to go with Rafa's design for workaholic.

Week 9-12– Packaging Design Prototyping
From week 9 onwards, we proceeded with printing the prototype for TB packaging. Initially, we were supposed to use the laser cutting machine from the Campus, but due to a saturated number of users during the semester, we decided to visit a printing shop and print from there.

Below is the full look of our printed packaging design for TB right after picking up. We printed our design using a corrugated board and a sheet of sticker on top of the board. We were so happy to see our design finally being printed physically :D

REFLECTION

This project was my first collaborative work with students from an external course of mine. It was an enjoyable experience to meet with the clients and discuss suitable solutions for their needs. Every step of the process was done together as a group, and I am grateful for the teamwork and efforts given by my group members. Having a discussion meeting every week was also highly helpful for proceeding with the process of our work, as we constantly gained what our clients needed and tailored it to their liking. I also learned to push my boundaries of my design styles when pitching my ideas to the clients, as every person has different preferences. Despite the fact that we had some minor issues with the printing of the packaging design, we found our solution and came up with a better outcome. I really enjoyed completing this project and the experiences gained from the design process, the people, and working as a group have improved my skills, and I hope to push myself to a higher outcome in the future with this knowledge.
