FINAL PROJECT—Animated Infographics

Assignment Instruction

For the final project, we were instructed to create animated infographics about the chosen topic. We were required to carry out a breakdown of the researched information into parts which include narrative and visualization to convey the issue to the viewers.

In the video, we should also include questions such as ‘What, why, where, when, who, and how’.

The final outcome requires an animated infographic video of about 1.5 minutes to 3 minutes as well as including the information in the form of data/statistics

Topic Research
The chosen topic is "The journey of Chocolate from a factory to consumer". We started researching and collecting information about the production process of chocolate along with the issues related to the production.

We also created a miro board among the group members to combine examples of different animating styles in the form of a mindmap. We decided to go for a whiteboard-style animation with partial mixed media/ collage in addition to the style selection.

Storyboard/ Distribution

For the storyboard, our group leader, Leen helped us sketch out the ideas we shared for the visualisation from the research information collected previously. I focused on the transition of each scene of the video flows.

After some discussion, we came up with the idea of one take linear transition animation, in which the animated transitions flow in a linear form horizontally from beginning to end. In this way, it is easier for the viewers to grasp the idea of the chocolate manufacturing process.

For the process of the video production, we have separated the roles into several parts to take care of.

Visualisation/ Animatic & Script Writing
As Mr Shamsul instructed us to create an animatic using the storyboard we created previously, the group members and I carried out a digitization of the storyboard sketches.

Below are the scenes each of us took part in:

  • Scene 1-3 by Leen
  • Scene 4-6 by Seoyoon (me)
  • Scene 7-9 by Ameera
  • Visual Reference Collection by Jia Ern
  • Script by Alefiya

For the narration, our group member Ameera took part in doing a voice-over by reading out the script prepared by Alefiya.

I then compiled these into one Animatic video using Adobe Premiere Pro.

Asset Production
For the illustrated assets for animation, we used Adobe Illustrator to create some visual elements.

Animation Process on After Effects
Jia Ern and I were in charge of the animation process, we used Adobe After Effects to animate the assets. I took part in animating the first half, and the other half was done by Jia Ern.

To make the illustrated characters movable, I used a puppet pin tool to point out the joints on their body and slightly adjusted the position of each so that they looked like they were walking, moving their hands and more.

Sound/ Voice Over Narration
For the sound effects and background music, we used loyalty-free music from several websites; Pixabay and Mixkit. Two of our group members, Alefiya were in charge of sound editing, and Ameera took part in recording the narration.

Topic: The journey of a Chocolate from Factory to Consumer

FEEDBACK

Week 05

TUTORIAL: Mr Shamsul suggested we should include information in data form such as charts of the population of chocolate consumers around the world/ income of chocolate factories and more.

Week 06

TUTORIAL: Mr Shamsul suggested that the volume of the background music/ sound effects should not disturb the main narration; try to lower the volume so that it is not distracting.

Add more scenes that match the narration along with the animation.

Week 07

TUTORIAL: Work on the timing- extend the scene duration that is too short.

REFLECTION

Overall, it was great working with new people and interacting together to build the team's relationship and skills. All of our group members contributed well to their given tasks, and we communicated from time to time using a group chat. I believe that despite the short time given in this semester, we were able to complete the instructed task step by step over the weeks. Although it was quite a challenge to carry out this ongoing final project along with individual projects, I was able to maintain my time management stabilized throughout the time. I have also learned that various feedback from each group member and lecturer is highly important in this module as there are many ways of conveying information in such ways expressed in design and I needed to keep in mind how the information would be seen to the audience through my design. Lastly, I am thankful for my group members giving their best to support each other for this outcome.
