Lecture Notes

Sometimes the designs that seem pretty/ pleasing may look offensive to others, therefore, as designers we need to think of how to avoid these things by embracing the habit of research as part of our work process.

Why is research important?
Make sure the progression is gradually done. Begin with rough research and gather information/ data in the form of a moldboard.

Research is to unite theory and practices of design to establish your project rationale. Keep the research process ongoing throughout the project.

When is research needed:
  1. Before writing the proposal
  2. After the production of the proposal
  3. During the creation of artwork

1. Before Writing the proposal

There are two types of research:

> Secondary Findings
  • Data collected through published and existing resources
  • Websites/ documentaries/ design sources/ inspirations
> Primary Findings
  • Sketches of proposed artworks based on the research from Secondary
  • Sketches/ storyboard/ Wireframe

2. After proposal

> Primary Findings
  • Data collected by you and the team
  • On-site observation/interviews/surveys

PROJECT 01- Proposal

In this module, the given theme for the project was "Cultural Sensitivity in Design" and we were instructed to propose 3 different ideas based on the chosen topic. As I applied for a field trip to Japan, we were required to choose a cultural sensitivity-related topic around Japan.

I was grouped with 2 other BDCM students and 3 BFDT students, and the chosen topic was to carry out a research study on Amekaji culture and its subcultures such as the "Gyaru" and "Rockabilly".

Below is our research study on the History of Amekaji along with additional information on Gyaru and Rockabilly culture:

Week 2 Research Study

We came up with 3 ideas to proceed with the project; a poster design, garment design, and a zine publication. After some discussion, we finalized our idea of creating a Japanese-style magazine which includes fashion design photographs and illustrations inspired by the Gyaru and Rockabilly subculture.

PROJECT 02- Data Collection

Beginning from Week 4 was the data collection/ field study week, and also the week of the Japan field trip. During the trip, we were advised to collect and gather visual/ oral/ textual artefacts as part of the research materials.

We decided to split into two among our group to gather the information, and a few of our group members were able to visit Amerikamura, which is an American lifestyle-inspired cultural place located in north Dotonbori of Osaka. From this place, we captured some photographs as visual references for our further progress.

For interviews, we were able to reach out to one of Qing's friends who is familiar with this subculture. A secondary data collection was also done by referring to Lizzie Bee Gyaru Blog.

PROJECT 03- Final Project

For the final project, we have divided our workload into different parts; the Illustration team and the fashion design team. For the illustration team, we created 2 full-body illustrations along with 2 sticker designs from each member. The fashion design team decided to work on 2 garments with some paintings on the back of the jackets.

The physical outcome is a 12-page zine with a pack of 4 stickers, and 2 garment designs. The content of the zine consists of an introduction to Amekaji culture and its history, some challenges people face who are in this community, as well as photographs of the garment designs and illustrations inspired by our topic.

I took part in creating 2 illustrations with 2 sticker designs, and was also in charge of the video presentation.
