FLIP TOPICS

Week 03 Topic — Miller's Law (Chunking)

In week 3, Mr Fauzi introduced us to Miller's Law, also known as chunking. Chunking is a term

We were instructed to collect information and carry out a presentation about 3 given topics which are:

1. A well-designed infographic
2.  UX/UI, web, app, games (screen-based)

3. Processes

with an explanation of the topics with suitable examples of how to best utilize each technique in terms of visual delivery.

Flip Topic 3 Brief

Week 3 Presentation

PROJECT 01—Instructable Infographic Poster

Assignment Instruction
For Project 01, we were instructed to create an infographic poster that includes contents of the recipes from Pasta GranniesWe were allowed to select one video from which to study, break it into chunks of information about the preparation and cooking process, and transform it into an instructable poster with animated visual elements.

Mr Shamsul also suggested we capture each Grandma's personality and unique dish identity and express them in the poster as part of the narrative structure.

The overall content of the poster should reflect the following:
  • To transmit or communicate a message.
  • To present large amounts of information in a compact and easy-to-understand way.
  • To reveal the data. Discovering cause-effect relations, knowing what’s happening.
  • To periodically monitor the evolution of certain parameters.
We are also required to keep these theoretical elements in mind:
  • Information type
  • Device
  • Principles (LATCH etc)
  • Aesthetics i.e: isometric, simplified illustrations

Concept Study
To begin with this project, I selected a video "Pasta Grannies discovers tortelli filled with cheese aged in a pit!". This video introduces us to the cooking instructions for making a Cheese Tortelli by Grandma Romana. Tortelli is a name given to ravioli in various regions of Italy.

I chose a recipe of tortelli as it has a fun shape and would be interesting to see when it's illustrated.

I also recorded some of the major information such as ingredients, cooking utensils used, and cooking instructions for making a Tortelli con Formaggio di fossa (Cheese Tortelli):

1. Ingredients
  • 100g of 00 flour
  • 4 eggs
  • Tomatoes
  • Shallots
  • Olive oil
  • Fresh basil
  • Formaggio di fossa (Pit-aged cheese)
  • Parmigiano (Parmesan cheese)
  • Ricotta Cheese
  • Lemon
  • Salt

2. Cooking Utensils
  • Cooking board
  • A small bowl for an egg
  • A big bowl for tomato sauce
  • Grater
  • Pastry Cutter
  • Flat round plate
  • Pot
  • Hand blender

3. Cooking Instructions
For the cooking instructions, I did a break down of the recipe into 5 chunks of steps for easier understanding.

    1. Making a dough

  • Place 100g of 00 flour on the cooking board and make a bowl shape.
  • Carefully crack 4 eggs into the bowl and place the eggs into the prepared flour.
  • Scramble the egg before gradually mixing the two ingredients together.
  • After the egg is well mixed, mix the scrambled egg with the flour and knead until it turns into a smooth dough.
  • Rest the dough for some time

    2. Preparing a tomato sauce for the Tortelli

  • Dice the shallot into small cubes.
  • Chop up the tomatoes, and remove the tomato seeds.
  • Place the diced shallots and tomatoes into a bowl and add olive oil, mix them well with a fresh basil.
  • Boil the sauce

    3. Preparing a cheese filling for the Tortelli

  • Grate the Formaggio di fossa & parmagiano using a grater.
  • Mix them well with some ricotta cheese and an egg.

    4. Making of Tortelli

  • Roll up the dough into a circle
  • Keep rolling until the cooking board is visible through the dough
  • Zest the lemon into the cheese filling using a grater, mix them well
  • Place a dessert spoon-sized piece of cheese fillings onto the dough in rows.
  • Carefully fold the dough into half
  • Seal the edge of the dough using the edge of the plate.
  • Cut the dough into square pieces using a pastry cutter
  • Take out the air inside the Tortelli by carefully pressing the tortelli using two hands.

    5. Boiling the Tortelli &  Final touch-ups

  • Boil the tortelli in the salted boiling water for 3 minutes.
  • Puree the stewed tomatoes with a hand blender.
  • Dress up tortelli with a spoonful of sauce.
  • Finish the dish with a sprinkle of Parmigiano.

    Buon Appetito!

4. Studying Grandma Romana's style of cooking

Grandma Romana cooks with thorough care at each step throughout her cooking process. She keeps attention to the details such as checking the egg quality before putting it into the flour, and making sure the tortelli dough is fully closed with its fillings so when she boils them later on, the tortelli keeps its shape stable. She also places some sauce first onto the place so that the tortelli does not stick when being placed.

I took inspiration from her thorough way of cooking and decided to reflect that on my infographic poster.

Visual References
After studying the cooking video, I began looking for visual references and deciding what kind of style of instructable infographic I wanted to make for this project.

Below are some of the references I got inspired by:

Fig 1.2 Reference 1, Week 3 (21/02/2024)

Fig 1.2 Reference 2, Tomyum Recipe by Joe Inthavong, Behance, Week 3 (21/02/2024)

Mainly I wanted to create my poster something similar to the two infographics above, in which the ingredients float around above the completed dish and in each part, there is an instruction of steps.

I also looked for more alternative options in terms of the style of the layout.

Sketches
For the ideation stage, I sketched out several layouts of different concepts to explore which design layout would be suitable for the recipe I selected.

Fig 2.1 Sketch 1, Week 3 (21/02/2024)

Fig 2.2 Sketch 2, Week 3 (21/02/2024)

The second sketch was a variated version from the first sketch which I placed the ingredients at the sides and the transition of the making of tortelli from start to finish.

Fig 2.3 Sketch 3, Week 3 (21/02/2024)

Next sketch is a divided sections of tortelli pieces including the instructions for each step of the recipe.

Fig 2.4 Sketch 4, Week 3 (21/02/2024)

Sketch 4 shows circular instructions mainly showing the illustrated instruction of each step of the recipe divided into chunks and the final outcome of the tortelli being in the centre.

Fig 2.5 Sketch 5, Week 3 (21/02/2024)

The fifth sketch is a dissection of the tortelli where it exposes its ingredients and the fillings inside the tortelli, mostly inspired by reference 5.

Fig 2.5 Sketch 6, Week 3 (21/02/2024)

Sketch 6 is inspired by visual reference 4, in which I referred to the idea of a flowing transition from the beginning to the end of the cooking process as well as from my sketch 2. After deciding to go with sketch 6, I moved on to a more detailed version of the sketch.

Digitization Process
I used Adobe Illustrator for the digitization process. I used a 1240 x 1750 px size canvas.

FEEDBACK

Week 03

TUTORIAL: Mr Shamsul suggested we should utilise the tab option on Adobe Illustrator for a more concise arrangement of the layouts. Alt + arrow for text alignment, change preferences to 5 in settings. Make sure there is a high contrast between the colour of the background with the text boxes. Keep the design simple.
